An artist statement is a description of your work in your own words. It should explain why you made an art work, or a series of art works and how you made what you created. An artist statement will describe your creative process, including your inspiration, motivation and the method of how you made your work. It will include artistic language and insight into what you have made.

Think of your artist statement like a caption, something similar to what you would include on a social media post. An artist statement will help the reader understand what is going on in the art, like a caption helps them understand the photo(s) in your post.  It will likely appear alongside your work at a gallery, exhibition, art fair display or in a portfolio containing your art.
